Zoom on a trend – The New Nautical

Hi everyone! I love nautical style and while it may not have brought major waves this year, it still remains a classic trend. Here are some tips and ideas on how to revive this timeless style!

With traditional nautical colors, it’s super important to not go overboard (the halloween sailor costume is out for this one ladies). Your neutral and basic pieces will be very useful as they will make the perfect backdrop for the well-known color scheme. Go for black and white for more of a retro, ladylike look (think Blair Warldorf’s outfit when she’s waiting for Chuck to go to Tuscany) but choose cream & sandy tones instead for a beachy feel.

The silhouettes can be feminine and elegant with full skirts and heels or menswear inspired with blazers and trousers. Either way, it’s always polished and classy.

Key details in nautical style

– Stripes (..duh)

– Red, white, blue (self-explanatory)

– Light knitwear

– White/Cream accents – inspired by sailor clothing (see outfit below in the middle )

– Classic pumps, sandals or heeled or regular loafers (e.g. toms or boat shoes)

– Anchors or boats

– Button detailing (like that popular short style)

Color palette

Break up the typical combo. Extend your color palette towards colors like teal and tangerine. Feeling even bolder? Add bright on trend shades like lime green or even fushia. Always complete the look with a least one classic hue. If not, balance it out with other nautical characteristics like stripes.

Stripes are basically a must in the nautical world but every once in a while, step out of your confort zone and try a fun and chic ensemble by incorporating small accents of floral or polka dots. Just make sure it’s not overwhelming to keep focus on the theme.

Like I mentionned earlier, complete your outfit with details like anchors, boats or even little birds. Look for jewelry, brooches and even printed dresses. Also try accents of leather, lace, mesh and tweed for a fresh spin on the old cotton.

*Styling tip The silhouettes are very similar but sometimes, you can spice things up by adding a pencil skirt or a pair of sexy heels ; )
